Falcotrans’ humble beginnings consisted of a horse & cart operation in distant 1920. Saviour Falzon, known as Ta’ Mena, and his three sons would transport frozen meat and flour that had just arrived from Australia, on behalf of the British Services.
In 1949, Saviour’s two sons purchased their first vehicle, a 1941 Chevrolet truck, using it to transport frozen meats. By the time the grand children joined the company, the business had expanded to the transportation of fruit and general cargo.
In 1960, the Falzons landed a prestigious contract, transporting milk from the airport to the American Sixth Fleet stationed in the Grand Harbour. During this era, the family continued expanding its operations to include deliveries of loose cargo. Everything was manually unloaded from boats at the ports, transferred onto pallets, and then loaded onto small trucks for delivery.
In 1970, Saviour’s son, Anthony, founded Anthony Falzon & Sons, leading the company through a series of milestones. The company began slowly growing its fleet of trucks and started accommodating larger shipments, marking the beginning of its expansion into more substantial logistics operations.
The 1980s marked a significant development as trailers were introduced into Malta from other European countries, transporting goods directly to local clients. Despite challenges in the local transportation industry, the company saw an opportunity to embrace this business model.
In 1986, Falcotrans was established after acquiring its first refrigerated trailer. Early operations focused on transporting tobacco, setting a solid foundation for future growth. The company, then expanded its fleet with a second refrigerated trailer to start importing cheeses, primarily from Germany and Austria, further establishing its identity in the market.
During the 1990s, Falcotrans acquired more trailers, facilitating exports and imports between Europe and Malta. The company continued to grow its fleet of refrigerated trailers to meet increasing demand from countries like Italy and the UK. In 1996, the company purchased its current premises at Flagstone Wharf.
The entry of Malta into the EU in 2004 catalysed significant growth in operations, prompting an expansion in the fleet and service reach. The company expanded to 10 trailers and 4 trucks operating abroad, extending services across Europe and the UK.
In 2010, James Falzon was appointed Managing Director, ushering in a new era of leadership and strategic direction. The improving economy of Malta led to a surge in demand for services, resulting in further business growth.
Leveraging our expertise in refrigerated goods transportation, Falcotrans entered the pharmaceutical and healthcare logistics niche in 2011. This strategic move has since grown to become one of the strongest pillars of the company, reflecting our commitment to excellence and reliability in specialised logistics services.
By 2014, Falcotrans continued to expand, reaching 10 trucks stationed on continental Europe and 30+ trailers. Changing lifestyles and a growing population spurred demand for fresh food, dry, and chilled items.
The Covid-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, with container prices soaring due to supply and demand imbalances. This shift presented an opportunity as more clients opted for trailer transport. The pandemic also changed consumer spending habits, leading to increased imports and a new consumption culture.
In 2021, Falcotrans started offering container logistics services to provide a more comprehensive solution to clients. This initiative was driven by the increased demand for versatile logistics options and the need to adapt to the changing market dynamics during the pandemic.
In 2022, the company established Falco Italia, a logistics hub in the North of Italy, privately owned by Falcotrans, offering clients enhanced, real-time information and support for their transportation requirements.
As of 2024, Falcotrans' fleet has grown to 32 trucks on the continent and 180 over trailers, operating in 12 countries. The company continues to adapt and innovate, ensuring its services align with the dynamic demands of clients and the market.
